13Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. ~ John 15:13 (ESV)
Walter Clifton Miles was Cindy’s uncle, and he passed away last week. Yesterday was his funeral service. Uncle Walter was a charter member of the Woodland, NC Volunteer Fire Department, serving well over 60 years in the service of helping to save others from harm. He was a good man, a good father, a good Christian, and a good Servant, and today, he is receiving his Heavenly Reward.
Uncle Walter leaves behind two children, Jane and Walter, Jr., and their spouses, and two grandchildren. Additionally, he leaves behind a town that has known him all of his life, other family, friends, and loved ones, acquaintances, and everyone that came into contact with him, no matter how small the interaction.
At the end of the service, the Woodland Fire Department called in a last call for Uncle Walter. I had never experienced anything like that before — it was beautiful, it was moving, it was emotional, it was tearful. After his many years of service, Uncle Walter has been released from service, the service of both his Fire Department and the Service of his God. I have no doubt that Uncle Walter was received in Heaven by Jesus, who embraced him and told him, “Well done, My good and faithful Servant.”
Please pray for all of Uncle Walter’s family, his children, his grandchildren, his friends and family, their loved ones, everyone that knew Uncle Walter and miss him immensely. Please pray for God’s Peace, Comfort, and Strength to descend upon them, so that they would be able to remember Uncle Walter as he wants to be best known — as a good man, a man who gave to others before thinking of himself, as one that taught many of the men of that Fire Department to be men themselves. Pray for those that attended to Uncle Walter in his truck on that day, pray for their Peace, that they not second guess themselves, that they know that God’s Hand was in this, and that there was nothing that they could do on that day to change the outcome. Now, please pray with us the prayer that Jesus taught us to pray:
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done,
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory forever and ever. Amen.
